Can a Christian ever morally work in an industry creating military weapons?

I think that it is moral to work in an industry creating military weapons. Although the weapons are dangerous and destructive, they are for our country and without them we may not be able to protect the common good of the people. Also, in order to keep up with the most modern forms of weapons we need to constantly be creating new weapons or else we put the country and the people who serve our country in danger. Although they are dangerous and violent, they are necessary and also have many plus sides and are a form of protection for the country.

I agree with Jennifer, without weapons how are we supposed to protect our country. I think it's moral if we only use weapons to protect our country. When we use weapons for other things besides protecting the country, it should be immoral.

I agree with Jennifer and Carmen. Although the results of the weapons bein made may not be moral, there are some reasons why it is moral. The workers are protecting their country and trying to do what is best for the common good of the citizens. As mentioned in the movie, a lot of times the market of building weapons and military equipment becomes very competetive. I do not think it is right to directly influence this kind of business that results in people loosing their lives. If the workers are doing it to protect the soldiers then I think that is morally alright to work for.

Going along with what Sam said, It's not right to directly influence this kind of business. How will you protect a country without weapons? Also, you have to keep in mind some people just do that for a living to make a profit to take care of themsleves and their families. It shouldnt be immoral because its a job.

I agree with Carmen, Jennifer, and Sam about how weapons are an important part in protecting our country. But sometimes these weapons can be used immorally, and not for protection in war. For example, the My Lai Massacre in 1968, where around 400 unarmed civilians were killed by military weapons. Yes, I agree with Carmen that this is a job, but i think the workers in these industries need to realize that there are times these weapons have killed innocent people.

I agree with Carmen, Jennifer, Sam, and Elizabeth that creating military weapons is moral in order to protect our country. As long as we do not use the weapons for anything other then protecting our country then it is moral. We need people to create military weapons in case there were something to happen. Creating the weapon does not necessarily mean we have to use it but it is good to have in case. There are times weapons are not moral but there is no other way to protect our country. So, I agree that we need the weapons in order to protect the soldiers and our country.

I agree with Danielle that sometimes weapons are necessary to protect our country, and therefore, it is not immoral for a Christian to work in a military industry. But, I think that the morality of working in the industry relies on if the war is just or not. If the Christian agrees with the just war theory, then it should only be moral to work in the industry if the weapons are used in a just war. Otherwise, the Christian is contributing to a war that they believe is not morally okay.

I disagree that it has to be a just war to be able to work in a military industry. The industry has to have the military weapons ready for war whether or not there is a war coming, therefore they do not know which war the weapons will be used in. The Christian is not choosing how the weapon is used, so they are not contributing to the unjust wars. The military industries are just because it is the only thing we can use to protect our country by making the weapons.

That's a good point Danielle. I did not consider the fact that weapons for war must be manufactured before the war actually begins. It is true that the worker can not decide wether the weapons are used for a just war or not, so they are unable to choose to make weapons only for just war. Therefore, I agree with you that the Christian can not be held morally responsible for a weapon being used in an unjust war. Since the weapons may be used for a just war, it is moral for the Christian to work in military industries.

I agree with jennifer. I think in todays world it is neccesary that we have some way of protecting ourselves. with out weapons we would be vulnerable and could be easily taken over. In todays society words will not solve problems, although i dont agree its just the way it is. Therefore i dont think that it should be the first choice for a christain to work in a military factory, but if its the only job they can get i say go for it.

I believe that the morality of creating military workers has nothing to do with whether or not someone decides to use it for immoral purposes. Furthermore, creating weapons may also serve as an intimidation factor, meaning that other countries may be deterred from wanting to attack us since we would have a vast amount of military weapons.

I agree with tkev317 because if you create something for war it is not immoral because you aren't using the weapon yourself you are creating it to help others so they can keep your country safe and you are not responsible for the way the military chooses to use what you make

In terms of the Basic Goods, specifically Life; a job is needed to sustain your life with food and shelter. Regardless of the means of which you gain that shelter, working a military job fulfills the Basic good of Life, which is part of Christian belief.

Peter, under the Basic Goods one of the factors is protecting life. Yes, of course people need jobs in order to make money and support themselves and their households, but I feel like people who work in these industries need to realize that these weapons that are being created can be used immorally. I agree with the points that were made above about how the workers themselves cannot control how these weapons are used, but since they have a part in making these weapons, some may feel like they take responsibility in what happens with these weapons.
