"His whole emphasis on abortion makes the issue of women's freedom uttered in a language of death." - Marina Warner (5mins 15 seconds into part 12 of John Paul II: Millennial Pope
Is being pro-life inherently anti-woman or anti-feminist?

Being pro-life does not necessarily mean you are anti-woman/feminist. Most women, such as sister of the Church, do not agree with abortion. Having an abortion is a choice of a woman. It does not define a gender, even though a majority of supporters for pro-life are men. Being pro-life is not about the women and their own personal choice. Its about how its wrong to kill a living being and the Church and supporters of pro-life want there not to be a choice of killing that being.

Most women...do not agree with abortion. ...a majority of supporters for pro-life are men. Sarah, what do you mean here? These seem to be conflicting statements. But isn't it inevitably about women and their personal choice? If I am pro-choice, don't I have to be saying that women should not get to have certain choices about their bodies?

I totally agree with Sara, being pro life does not mean that one is anti-women's rights. If someone believes in an unborn child's "pro-life rights" then both the mother and the child have separate rights: the rights of the child and the right of the mother. This may appear to be anti-woman's rights because the mother does not have total control over the situation. However, the argument can be made that a mother NEVER has the right over her child's right to life because only God decides when someones time is up, and it is not right to play the role of God. SO, if the mother never has the right to take away an unborn child's life then you are not taking away any of her rights and therefor it is not "Anti-woman's rights"

I agree with Nick, being pro life is not the same as being anti-feminist. People who are pro life argue that it is not a within a woman's rights to decide if her unborn child will live or die, because the unborn baby is a separate person and therefore it has human dignity and rights of its own, such as life. So being pro-life is not being anti feminist because none of the woman's rights are being violated.

Like Nick Dawdle, Sara and Frank have said being "pro life does not mean that one is anti-woman rights. Yes it is true that than the people believe that the unborn child's life should have rights and it is true that the child itself and the mother have their own rights. Since everyone is born with the right to live, like mentioned by Nick, since than being pro life isn't necessary being anti-feminist. Even though like mentioned above man are more in favor of pro-life, i think that is not directly inherently to be said that the person has to be anti-woman rights. I think that just those people choose the decision, that abortion could be avoided with different types of procedures. They fallow the belief of the Magisterium, that abortion takes the right to live, and everyone has that right. Also i think that most pro-life supporters sometimes think woman that choose abortion do it just to kill the baby and not get pregnant, i don't think sometimes they understand the conditions that woman are in, and that sometimes a choice of abortion ends up being the best resolution, because of economics and other problems, like education. I feel like pro-life supporters shouldn't be described as anti-woman and anti-feminist, but are because don't consider the consequences and the situation of why abortion is done.

As a child we are told what to do, what to wear, and what to eat by our parents. And that is okay because they were supporting us and helping us live. However when it comes to the case of abortion and the mothers right to choose to abort the child it is wrong because it is not helping the child.
In the case of children who were born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (Fetal alcohol syndrome is growth, mental, and physical problems that may occur in a baby when a mother drinks alcohol during pregnancy) there have been court cases that have emerged because the mother drank when she had a child and led to the child's future retardation or health problems. It appears strange that someone can get in trouble for INJURING a child, while the child is in the womb, and not getting in trouble for KILLING a child, while the child is in the womb. both are the mothers decision both hurt a child FAS cases have found mothers to be guilty, especially when the child lives with abortion, mothers do not have legal problems in court when the child DIES

I agree with ania and fran because the woman's right is not being violated. Also, they have their own freedom and choice to have an abortion. Its not going against life, it is the condition or situation they are involved in that causes them to seek an abortion.

I disagree with almost everyone on this thread. While I don't believe a pro-life point of view to be completely anti-feminist, I do believe that it plays a role in it because a woman's rights are being violated if she is not allowed to have a say in whether or not she will have a child, especially in cases of rape. While yes, it is ending a life, if a woman is having an abortion, she probably didn't plan on getting pregnant. If she didn't plan on it she probably does not want a kid or cannot support one at the moment, not to mention the fact that she has probably been completely blindsided. Additionally, pregnancy and childbirth are not things for a woman to go through, and so a woman should have the choice whether or not to allow that to happen to her body. If she does not have that choice, her rights are being completely violated.

I agree with Amy on how pro life is not completely anti-feminist but pro life does not exactly support woman rights. Pro life takes away the choice of a woman and i don't think anyone can have that authority because it is her own body so she should be able to make that decision. That doesn't make that decision any less horrible, and i'm not saying i believe in abortion but taking away a woman's ability to make a decision about herself should only be made by her and no one else.

I would have to disagree with amyb96 because murder is murder period. If a woman decides to have an abortion it is against God's way and I don't believe it's a woman's right to have an abortion because it is like having the right to kill. And in the case of a serious situation as being raped, then the woman can have to decision to conceive the baby and out it up for adoption if they cannot support it or want it. There is no reason to kill another human being for ones own person sake. So in conclusion I don't think it goes against woman's right because it is not a right to kill.

Saram, I must make a point of the fact that you speak for "most women" when you say that most women do not agree with abortion. But may I ask how you would support that statement? You must provide a survey, a website, at least some little bit of evidence to back your claim. Otherwise, I would not like to be spoken for as such. I am not implying that you are wrong or right, only that you provide no evidence.

I agree with jovaneemejia completely. The child inside the mother is alive and a living human being. Aborting the child is the equilivant to murder and murder is not okay in any circumstance. Abortion is the same. I feel like women should have their choice to do whatever they personally feel is right but as someone looking in on a situation and not acutally going through anything, I feel that abortion is wrong no matter what. If I were to be put in someone else's shoes that is considering an abortion after having a difficult past I might think about the whole situation differently.

I got to say when it comes to these threats, I disagree with some people that say that a woman should never kill or abort a child, because sometimes it is needed, for example even in a situation where either the mother can be saved or the new born baby, its a risk and a decision that has to be made in order to keep one life alive. Also there is other situations, where for example rape, if a woman is rape, she should have the ability to abort her child because if she gives birth looking everyday at her baby, she might remember the most devastating moment of her life and become very depressed. Yes if abortion could be avoided it should, but in extreme circumstances people need to respect the decisions of the woman that have chosen to have an abortion.

Some of the people in this thread are not thinking about all of the possiblities there are for abortions. I agree with ania when it comes to this... suppose a 13 year old gets impregnanted. Some of you are supporting forcing this CHILD to bear a child. she is only thirteen! wouldnt some of you sway your views in this situation? true, it is not responsible to get pregnant at this age but we all make mistakes sometimes, even if they are bigger mistakes. it just seems wrong to me to force her to give birth. and how far will it go? girls can get pregnant as early as 9 years old, as soon as they have gotten their first period. what if a 9 year old was impregnanted say by rape? is it right to follow through with an abortion? every situation is different, things are not as "black and white" as they seem.
