At the beginning of The Corporation, they ask several interviewees what they think is the best image or metaphor for the corporation. Which of these images do you think is best? Is there another metaphor that you think would work better? Why?

I personally think the best image for a corporation would be a slot machine. This is because corporations have a mainly economic and profit gain focus. Like humans, they can somewhat function on their own with the noises and lights they have, yet they are not human. This correlates to the movie's idea that businesses resemble humans but do not act emotionally like them all the time. They both carry out their functions in a uniformed way. Slot machines are a little tricky addicting people to continue spending money, while corporations use advertising and clever schemes to keep customers interested in their products. Sometimes machines dysfunction and have to be fixed just like business problems. The greed and power associated with corporations seem evident in the strong, metal money machines. At the same time some corporations follow morals and help people which could be represented by someone winning the jackpot. - Elle zadina

I agree with Elle because, like slot machines, corporations enforce greed and are money based. I don't believe there is a better image, but if this one would not fit, then it would be that of Mr. Krabs on "Spongebob Squarepants" because the customers do not seem to matter as much as making a profit.

I agree with Amy on the slot machines. Slot Machines enforce greed, if they weren't so tempting people wouldn't waste all their money and time on them. Corporations obviously know what it does to people and they don't care because it's bringing them a profit.

In addition to my earlier post, what Carmen said regarding corporations knowing about how horrible the products are and their effects on people, makes sense as well and the videos we watched in class help to enforce this. One of them discussed the health issues that come with some of the many manufactured products and how companies will purposely subject people to it to make a profit.

What were all of the images/metaphors shown in the documentary?

I think it's a big generalization to say that corporations don't care about their customers. The image of the slot machine is a good one but I do think that many corporations still care and devoted to their customers. For example, a few weeks ago my brother and I purchased a coach purse for my mom on her birthday. A few weeks later we received a hand written thank you note from the saleswoman that helped us for probably less than 15 minutes. The card was detailed and it showed she truly made an effort to give us a great experience. This is well known to be a standard procedure for Coach as well as some other companies. I don't think that business is always heartless. I think there are still many human elements to corporations today.
