What is the bigger moral threat in our modern world: the increasing powers of businesses or of the government?

Defiantly government. Run by people who have to get elected though high prices campaigns and quasi-corruptive promises, these people seldom have one objective in mind. They tetter between the will of the people, their ideals, and political strong arming. Most government programs such as social security and Medicare have lost the government a good amount of money. In face one can assume that the inefficiency and beucroatic red tape must be cut before doing anything, hinders the government. On the other hand, businesses promote efficiency and have one goal. This goal is to make a profit. Some demonize businesses for this goal but in a truly capitalistic society businesses have to compete for work and employment. This enables employees and the public to shop around for good work and good deals. This creates an independent economy that allows all to thrive and take advantage of competition. If workers cop out easily to agreeing to a cheap salary then that is his fault. He doesn't need some government acting as his dad to mediate salaries. With that being said there does need to be a minimum Wage only because the standard of living in the US would drop without it.

I agree with Will on this statement. The government is "higher up there" than any corporation. Government officials determine the outcomes of the corporation; some corporations go bankrupt due to the excessive taxes they must pay the government. We can buy something from a certain corporation but ultimately the government wins because the corporations are forced to give up so much money in taxes. I am going to try to incorporate an analogy I heard from a movie I recently watched. It said that "yes the father is the head of the family, but the wife is the neck. She can turn the head in whatever direction she chooses." Similarly, despite the fact that corporations may be the head, the government ultimately chooses the outcome of these corporations. The government can choose to disband the corporations, leading to their bankruptcy. In conclusion, I believe that since the government is "superior" to corporations, it is a bigger threat to us than corporations.

the inefficiency and beucroatic red tape must be cut before doing anything, hinders the government. On the other hand, businesses promote efficiency Will, couldn't this be made to serve the opposite argument? If the government is almost by definition inefficient, how big of a threat can it be? Basia, wouldn't this be the equivalent of saying that the "neck" is too stiff to be able to turn the head much?

The inefficency of the government hinders progress and profit in the business world, not to mention innovation. I have a friend who works for CPS and before she can make one decision, she must consult 50 people and get their approval. By then the issue is almost resolved. There is where lazy workers reside. They take advantage of the slowness and do nothing, hindering the teaching of our next generation

I don't think that the neck is too stiff to turn the head much. The government has authority to anything that it decides to do. Additionally, the government has supreme control over anything that it wishes to do. It is so flexible, so it can't be stiff. Because of its flexible authority, the government has dominance over corporations. The government also can't be stiff or else it wouldn't function properly. If it were stiff, the government would be corrupted.

Will, I know you are better at this topic than me, so I might make a fool of myself, but here goes anyway.... Isn't one of the reasons government is so inefficient/corrupt because of the lobbyists with their corporate agendas? I think the best way to improve government and bring out its full potential (which is helping its people), is to GET MONEY OUT OF POLITICS!

The reason politics is so bad is because of unwillingness to compromise. That being said I nor anyone want to give up my core beliefs but some need to evaluate what is truly important. I am with you that elected officals should make decisions based on their own beliefs and not $$ but it is almost impossible to get money out of politics.

The bigger threat is the growing of busines. Busines our the ones that give support to politics if when they get into office they can pass laws that will help the busines in becoming a power. So at the root of corruption I belive is busines that I a more moral threat to are society.

I think government is more of a threat because the government can tell businesses what to do, so it only seems logical that government is more threatening.

I believe that the government is the bigger threater because it jepordizes the civil liberties of citicenz in the U.S. by having unconstitutional control over capitralism, and the free trade market. The government already taxes the American people a ridiculous amount, and should learn how to spend the money they collect more wisely, rather than take more. The government should not have any say in the economy of our nation because, the law should not be applied to the means of peoples income and businesses.
